“We’re going streaking!”

~ Frank “The Tank” from Old School, 2003

Connor and Jack are back in school…HURRAY!!   Returning to elementary school is rather subdued compared to what lies ahead for our boys, I’m quite certain (especially if they’re anything like their parents…!)  Yeah….this kindergarten and second grade stuff is a cake-walk!  What’s got me worried is about 10 years down the line…

But I digress.  Anyway, YES! The kids are back in school!!

This exuberance is a sign of the times and tells me that…(crap)…I really am getting older!  I can now say with complete honesty that I understand why mom couldn’t wait for the school year to begin each Summer: School got us back in a routine and reinstated her much-coveted freedom.

I’ve been thrilled for Connor to go back to school.  The routine is key. He will see his buddies - play on the playground - actually learn something.

He’ll be right back in the consistent swing of things.

But, I missed the ceremonial “First Day of School” with Connor (and Jack!) yesterday morning.   Well…okay, I could have been up early and rushed across town to partake of the send-off - but I knew Jill had it covered. With Jill as part of my family, I honestly didn’t feel compelled to rush through heinous traffic just for a 2 second peck on the cheek and potential eye-roll since Connor has slowly segued into “don’t-hold-my-hand” territory.

The point of all of this?  Even though I don’t have Connor half the time…I NEVER miss-out on the good stuff.  In fact, I don’t even miss-out on the mundane daily stuff, either.

Before I even got to my office, Jill had already sent me a couple of pictures of the boys bedecked in blue uniform shirts, blindingly white new shoes, new haircuts, new backpacks!  So, because of Jill, I really don’t “miss out” on anything at all. She keeps me SO in the loop that she’s my lifeline to Connor.  Through her, I heard about Connor and Jack’s first day and all went smoothly.

Ahhh….now….let’s just see what happens in a few years when college is upon us and our visions turn from concerns about apple juice boxes to kegerators…
