“Harvey Wallbanger”

When the beginning discussions of a mellow Easter began in early March, I never imagined how it would ultimately unfold.  At first, Rod and I planned to have immediate family (i.e. Shelley & Steve and Mike).  After family asked about our Easter plans, we all decided to have immediate family plus parents, grandparents (except Mike and Steve’s who are out of town), cousins and friends.

Our plans were simple: We wanted to have fun, relax and enjoy our family.  The pot luck scenario seemed the most realistic option (although I’m not a big fan…).  So, Rod and I provided the ham and drinks and each couple/individual chose to bring whatever dish/drink they preferred.  I remembered allocating desserts to some guests as I knew I could end-up with  5 mashed potato recipes and 8 green bean casseroles!  Shelley told me that her mom was planning to bringing not one, but TWO homemade cakes.  I was stoked!  Dessert is my favorite!  I seriously save some room for dessert by ignoring the remaining healthy food on my plate.

Some people arrived at 10:00 am for the Easter egg hunt, while others came between 11:30 - 1:00 pm.  We basically had all of the food displayed for everyone to enjoy - “buffet style” and all.  Most of the guests had arrived and there were no additional desserts - which concerned me.  Oh no!!   Then, Shelley’s mom and dad arrived with their two precious cakes in hand.  I was greeted by Shelley’s mom, Jean,  carrying orange cake holders with aluminum foil on the outside, and a sifter for powdered sugar.  From the moment Shelley’s parents walked through the front door, all I heard was Jean saying:  ”What?”  “You’ve  never had my Harvey Wallbanger cake?”  I looked at her with confusion, “Um…No….”  It was as though she was Nicole Kidman in Moulin Rouge belting out, “Haaaarrvvey Walllbaaaaaanger!!”  It was hilarious.

I found myself mesmerized by Shelley’s mom.  Here I was spending Easter with my own ”family” (my parents, sister, etc.), but I wanted to hang out with Shelley’s mom.  There’s absolutely nothing wrong with this scenario, and quite frankly it’s been very healthy for all of us.  But from an outsider, I’m sure I would have heard a…”Weird.”

As the day continued, we ate, sang, listened to music and enjoyed spending our time together -  all of us as one cohesive group.   We were a family.  This is definitely an Easter that will never be forgotten.  I mean, I’m 34 years old, but as I looked around, I felt more at home than ever.  Everyone had their roles/parts to play and we fit together like a 500 piece puzzle.

Random photographs were taken with friends and family members, water guns broke out, (Kelly’s beautiful white skirt was soaked!), drinks were consumed, and the outdoor fireplace lit up the faces of those who remained.  Our neighbors had an 8 piece Mariachi band live in their backyard.  I think we enjoyed the music more than they did (especially Martha, Rod’s mother, who is from Guadalajara).   It was wonderful and I was so happy (though I missed the rest of my sisters).  My sister Stacy, her husband John, and baby Riley made it,  though!!  It was so much fun!

Even with the differences between generations and marital statuses,  we all came together as a family. We truly enjoyed our time together

Now, when I sit here and think about our first Easter together, I can’t help but hear laughter, see the smiling faces, and remember Jean say, ”Harvey Wallbanger!!”
